Hindi typing test: Mangal, Kruti Dev, InScript and Remington explained

Hindi typing gets confusing because font, keyboard layout and encoding are three different things. Get those right before you chase WPM.

Hindi typing becomes confusing because people often mix up three different things: the font, the keyboard layout and the encoding system. A candidate may say 'I type in Mangal' when Mangal is the font, while the actual key layout may be InScript or Remington.

Understanding the difference helps you choose the correct Hindi typing test and avoid practising the wrong setup for an exam.

Mangal is a Unicode font

Mangal is a Unicode Devanagari font commonly used for Hindi text in modern systems. Unicode means the characters are stored as standard Hindi characters rather than as a legacy font-specific mapping.

Because it is Unicode, Mangal text is more portable across websites and modern applications. Some current government notices specify Unicode or Mangal in Hindi typing and skill-test contexts.

The font itself does not decide which physical key produces which Hindi character. That is controlled by the keyboard layout or input method.

What is InScript?

InScript is a standardised Indian-script keyboard layout. It maps Devanagari characters to fixed keys on a QWERTY keyboard.

The main advantage is consistency across Unicode environments. The disadvantage for someone who learned traditional typewriter-style Hindi is that the key locations may feel unfamiliar at first.

If your exam specifies Mangal with InScript, practise that exact combination. Do not rely on phonetic transliteration because the exam keyboard may not provide it.

What is Remington GAIL?

Remington-style layouts are based on traditional Hindi typewriter habits. Remington GAIL is widely used in Hindi typing preparation and appears in government-related typing contexts.

Some candidates find it easier if they already learned Hindi on a typewriter-style layout. Others prefer InScript because it is standardised for Unicode input.

The important point is not which layout is best in general. The best layout is the one allowed by your exam and the one you can use accurately under time pressure.

What is Kruti Dev?

Kruti Dev is a legacy Hindi font family that has been used extensively in typing exams, offices and older workflows. It is not Unicode in the same way Mangal is. The visible Hindi characters depend on the font mapping.

Kruti Dev remains relevant in some recruitment environments and older state-level systems. However, do not assume every current exam accepts it. The SSC 2026 environment, for example, specifies Mangal for LDC/JSA Hindi typing.

Always read the latest official notification for your specific recruitment.

Why the wrong practice setup is dangerous

Suppose you spend two months building 30 WPM on Kruti Dev, but your test requires Mangal with InScript. Your speed does not automatically transfer because the key mapping and character behaviour differ.

The same problem happens when someone practises with Google transliteration, where they type Roman letters and the software converts them to Hindi. That is useful for everyday Hindi writing, but it may not match a government typing exam.

Exam preparation must reproduce the actual input method.

Hindi typing speed targets in Indian exams

Different exams use different standards. The SSC CHSL 2026 notice lists 30 WPM for Hindi for LDC/JSA, with a 10-minute test and Mangal font only. Previous RRB NTPC typist-post cycles have used 25 WPM Hindi, but the active CEN must be checked before treating that as a current requirement; the 2026 RRB NTPC cycle has removed CBTST for the notified typist posts.

The MP CPCT rulebook uses a published minimum of 20 net WPM for Hindi typing certification. Its Hindi typing module runs for 15 minutes and allows Remington GAIL or InScript on Unicode. Some CPCT score cards have shown 25 WPM as the 50% Hindi mark, so verify the current CPCT documentation.

These are examples, not one universal rule. State courts, police recruitment, clerical posts and other bodies can set their own speed, duration, layout and accuracy requirements.

How to practise Hindi typing correctly

Choose the required layout

Spend the first week learning key locations without caring about speed. Practise character groups, matras and common combinations.

Move to words and sentences

Hindi speed improves when combinations become a single movement pattern rather than a sequence you mentally decode key by key.

Start timed tests

Use five minutes for routine practice and ten minutes when your exam duration is ten minutes. Keep the layout stable.

Review error patterns

After every test, write down the exact characters that caused trouble. Build a short drill from those mistakes.

Focus on error patterns, not only WPM

Hindi typing errors often cluster around matras, half letters, conjuncts and visually similar combinations. After every test, write down the exact characters that caused trouble.

Create a short custom drill from those mistakes. Five focused minutes on your weakest combinations can be more useful than repeating a full passage with the same errors.

Should you practise English too?

If your recruitment tests both English and Hindi, keep separate progress records because the two skills may improve at different rates. MP CPCT, for example, assesses English and Hindi typing separately in its published rulebook.

Do not assume a fast English WPM means you will automatically type Hindi quickly. The motor patterns are different.

The safest exam-preparation checklist

  • Language: English, Hindi or both.
  • Font: Mangal, Kruti Dev or another specified font.
  • Keyboard layout: InScript, Remington GAIL, Remington CBI or another allowed layout.
  • Test duration: 5, 10 or 15 minutes, as stated in the notification.
  • Minimum speed and error rule: gross WPM, net WPM, key depressions or a scored test.
  • Editing rules: whether Backspace and correction tools are allowed.
  • Official source: the current notification for your recruitment cycle.

Practise with the matching layout

Use Typinger's Hindi typing test for Devanagari practice and keep your practice setup stable in the final weeks. Familiarity with the exact layout, font and duration is a competitive advantage on a timed test.

If your exam specifies a layout the site does not simulate, use the test for general Hindi speed and do your final exam simulation in the required software or layout.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mangal a keyboard layout or a font?
Mangal is a Unicode Devanagari font. The keyboard layout could be InScript, Remington GAIL or another allowed layout, so check which combination your exam requires.
What is the difference between Kruti Dev and Mangal?
Kruti Dev is a legacy font family, while Mangal is a Unicode font. The key mapping and character behaviour can differ, so practise the exact font and layout named in your notification.
Which Hindi typing layout is used in SSC CHSL 2026?
The 2026 notice requires Mangal font for LDC/JSA Hindi typing. Check your admit card and official instructions for the exact input setup.
What is a good Hindi typing speed?
SSC CHSL requires 30 WPM for Hindi LDC/JSA, while MP CPCT uses 20 net WPM as its published minimum. Other exams set their own standards, so use the official cutoff for your post.
Can I use Google transliteration for exam practice?
It is useful for everyday Hindi writing, but it may not match the exam's required input method. Practise the exact layout and font your notification specifies.
