What is a good typing speed? WPM benchmarks for India
A good typing speed is the speed your actual task needs, at an accuracy you can sustain. Here are practical benchmarks for students, office work and Indian government exams.
A good typing speed depends on what you need to do. A student writing assignments, an office assistant, a programmer and an SSC candidate can all have different targets.
The most useful way to judge your speed is to compare it with the task in front of you. For everyday typing, 40 WPM with high accuracy can feel comfortable. For some government examinations, a specific minimum such as 35 WPM in English is what matters. For competitive typing, much higher scores are possible, but they are not necessary for most people.
What does WPM mean?
WPM means words per minute. Typing tests usually standardise one word as five keystrokes or characters, including spaces. That makes it possible to compare typing speed even when the passage contains words of different lengths.
Two results matter: gross WPM and net WPM. Gross WPM measures how much you typed. Net WPM adjusts for errors or only counts correct output, depending on the test. If you are preparing for an exam, use the exam's own scoring method rather than assuming every website calculates mistakes the same way.
Practical WPM bands
These are useful learning bands, not universal rules. Different tests and employers will place the boundaries elsewhere.
- Under 20 WPM: beginner level. Focus on key familiarity and correct finger use.
- 20-30 WPM: developing. You can type normal text, but you may still look at the keyboard often.
- 30-40 WPM: functional for many study and entry-level office tasks.
- 40-50 WPM: comfortable for regular writing, email and documentation.
- 50-70 WPM: fast for everyday professional use if accuracy remains high.
- 70+ WPM: advanced for most general users.
What is a good typing speed for students?
For school and college students, a sustainable 30-40 WPM is a useful early target because it reduces the friction of writing assignments, notes and online answers. Once you can type without looking down, moving toward 40-50 WPM makes longer writing tasks feel much easier.
Students should not obsess over very high WPM. The bigger advantage comes from being able to think about the answer while the hands type automatically.
What is a good typing speed for office jobs?
For roles that involve regular emails, data entry, support, documentation or administrative work, 40-50 WPM with strong accuracy is a practical target. Some employers may set their own typing tests, and data-entry roles can demand higher sustained speed or specialised numeric entry.
If a job description specifies a minimum WPM, treat that as the real target. Practise above the minimum so you have a buffer for exam-day pressure, an unfamiliar keyboard and a harder passage.
Government exam benchmarks in India
Government recruitment is where good becomes a formal number. The exact requirement depends on the notification and post.
For SSC CHSL LDC/JSA, the 2026 notice lists 35 WPM for English and 30 WPM for Hindi, judged on a 10-minute passage. Previous RRB NTPC recruitment cycles for typist-designated posts have used 30 WPM in English or 25 WPM in Hindi, but candidates must verify the current CEN because railway recruitment rules can change by cycle. The 2026 RRB NTPC cycle has removed the CBTST for the notified typist posts, so do not prepare from an old speed figure without checking your own notification.
Madhya Pradesh CPCT uses separate net typing requirements: 30 NWPM for English and 20 NWPM for Hindi in the published rulebook. The typing modules run for 15 minutes and allow Remington GAIL or InScript on Unicode. Some CPCT score cards have shown 25 WPM as the 50% Hindi mark, so verify the current CPCT documentation.
These figures can change by recruitment cycle, so always verify your own official notice. Do not prepare from a random average typing speed chart when the exam gives an exact standard.

Is 30 WPM good?
Thirty WPM is a meaningful milestone. It shows you are moving beyond hunt-and-peck typing and can handle many basic tasks. It is also around the range used in several Indian exam standards, especially Hindi or lower-threshold typing tests.
If you are at 30 WPM, the next goal should usually be 35-40 WPM while keeping accuracy above 95%.
Is 40 WPM good?
For general use, yes. Forty WPM is fast enough that typing stops feeling like the main bottleneck for many people. It is also above some government exam minimums, although you must still follow the exact rules, duration and language of the test you are taking.
A 40 WPM score on a one-minute test is not automatically the same as 40 WPM over ten minutes. Always test your sustained speed.
Is 50 WPM good?
Fifty WPM with good accuracy is a strong everyday typing speed. At that pace, you can produce around 500 standardised words in ten minutes before error adjustments. It gives you a comfortable buffer above common 30-35 WPM exam thresholds.
Accuracy changes the meaning of speed
Suppose two people both show 45 gross WPM. One has 98% accuracy; the other has 88%. The first person is likely producing far more usable text and spending less time correcting mistakes.
That is why your result page should never be reduced to one giant WPM number. Track accuracy, error count and consistency too.
How to find your true typing speed
Take one short warm-up, then complete two 5-minute tests. Use the average of the two longer tests as your normal speed. If you are preparing for a 10-minute exam, test yourself for the full ten minutes at least twice per week.
Repeat the measurement under similar conditions: same keyboard, same test duration and similar passage difficulty. That gives you a trend you can trust.
The best target is a task-specific target
There is no single WPM score that makes someone a good typist. A better question is: can you type fast enough for your real task while staying accurate?
Use Typinger to measure your current WPM, choose a target that matches your study, job or exam goal, and then practise until you can reproduce that score consistently rather than hitting it once.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a good typing speed in WPM?
- For everyday work, 40-50 WPM with strong accuracy is comfortable. Around 30-40 WPM is functional for many study and entry-level tasks. Government exams set their own minimums, so use the official cutoff for your post.
- Is 30 WPM good for government jobs?
- It can meet some Hindi or lower-threshold typing tests, but SSC CHSL English requires 35 WPM. Always check the exact notification for your post, language and test duration.
- Is 40 WPM enough for SSC CHSL?
- Forty WPM gives you a small buffer above the 35 WPM English requirement, but you should be able to hold it for ten minutes with high accuracy. Aim for a stable 40+ rather than a one-minute peak.
- What is the average typing speed?
- Many typing tutors cite around 40 WPM as a rough adult average, but the number varies by source and test method. When an exam or employer gives a cutoff, use that instead of an average.
- Does 10-minute typing speed matter more than 1-minute speed?
- For exams and real work, yes. A one-minute score shows short-burst speed; a ten-minute score shows whether you can sustain accuracy and rhythm under fatigue.
